Under the description for each publication below is a list of topics explored in that specific publication.
Big Data - The Real Cost
WinterCorp Report, v1-08
Vendor claims aside, what are the driving costs in analyzing big data. WinterCorp introduces a cost model for the analysis and use of big data and the biggest elements may not be what you think. This analysis was published several years ago when there was much debate about the costs of Hadoop vs. the data warehouse. Now more new systems are being deployed on the cloud, but the same cost model applies. Understand which components of cost matter most in the end and you'll do better with your data strategy, regardless of where you deploy.

Practices at the Frontiers of Database Scalability, 2006
WinterCorp Research Report
WinterCorp's authorative research report on the rapid growth of large databases and the practices used to manage them. Based on a remarkably detailed survey of implementors and validated by WinterCorp software that actually measured key dimensions of database scale and how fast it was increasing, this report was the culmination of a 10-year program to understand the phenomenon of database growth and its implications for vendors and users. This program established that data warehouses had a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 70%, much faster than the rate of growth of disk capacity or processor power. Because this growth has actually increased over the following years, many of the findings are still relevant to architects and strategists.

State of Database Technology 2010
Information Week Analytics - Richard Winter
In 2010, Information Week Analytics surveyed 755 IT professionals on their experiences with, and attitudes about, database management. They then retained Richard Winter to assess the results and develop a report on the state of database technology. Mr. Winter's analysis is presented here and highlights several trends and concepts of continued significance today. A few points of particular interest may be "The DBA's Manifesto" on page 12, the discussion "Marts vs. Data Warehouses" starting on page 13 and the recommendations on strategy and platform selection starting under "Putting it all Together" on pages 46-52. Though this report was written before the cloud era, the fundamentals of database management have not changed.
